As a child, I would have loved having a book that captured what was typical for getting ready for a day out with my mom! It would have made me feel seen and represented. Thank you, Pearl and Sydney for taking the time to create this beautiful story to share the Black experience with everyone. I also enjoy the rich vocabulary that is used which is great for expanding the readers’ language skills! I can’t wait to share it with my little readers.

I immediately connected with “A Day with Mom” both as a mother and as a daughter. I see glimpses of myself in both Julia and her mother. In “A Day with Mom”, Sydney and Pearl share common and relatable Black family experiences in such a captivating way! I can’t wait to share this book with my own children as well as my clients. I’m already looking forward to the next book authored by this dynamic duo!

  3. Truvine Walker

As an adult Black woman, I would have thoroughly enjoyed this book as a young girl because every scene is relatable with vivid, colorful illustrations. A Day With Mom is a simple, yet positive, representation of life between a mother and daughter.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I’m excited because there are many ways language skills that can be targeted using this book. The robust vocabulary can definitely expose children to new and appropriate vocabulary by using visual supports and context clues. The story is great for recall of story grammar (e.g. characters, setting, initiating event/kickoff, sequence of events, problem, solution, feelings, and conclusion. In addition to basic recall, the flow of the story makes it ideal for narrative retelling. Making inferences and predictions can be targeted while reading the book aloud or afterwards.

A Day With Mom would be a great addition to any personal or classroom library because it’s an awesome story that enables little Black girls to experience positive representation of themselves, and allows people from other communities to witness it. It’s a win-win!

Sydney and Pearl beautifully capture the shared experiences of the everyday Black family, including the nostalgia of getting your hair done by your mother on a Saturday morning, and the simple joys of going to a book fair and going shopping. Julia is so many of us.
